What is BIS Registration ?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification is a mandatory requirement for products to ensure safety, quality, and performance as per Indian standards. It is essential for manufacturers, importers, and brands dealing with regulated products in India. Currently, 750+ products require BIS certification & this list continues to grow as part of the Government’s efforts to make Indian-made products globally competitive and trusted.
BIS certification is classified into three major categories
1️⃣ ISI Mark Certification – For Indian manufacturers producing regulated products.
2️⃣ FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme) – For overseas manufacturers exporting to India.
3️⃣ CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) – For electronic & IT products under mandatory BIS certification.
Documents Required For BIS Registration :
▪ Company Registration Certificate (GST/MSME/IEC)
▪ Factory Address Proof
▪ Product Technical Details & User Manual
▪ Trademark Certificate (if applicable)
▪ Test Report from BIS Approved Lab (within 90 days)
▪ Authorization Letter (for foreign manufacturers)

Who is Eligible for BIS Registration?
BIS Certification is mandatory for manufacturers — both Indian and Foreign , whose products fall under the BIS compulsory certification list.
Indian Manufacturers
Manufacturers producing goods in India and selling in the Indian market must obtain the ISI Mark Certification.
Key Requirements :
Foreign Manufacturers (FMCS Certification)
Overseas manufacturers exporting to India must apply under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS).
Key Requirements :
Importers & Brand Owners
Importers and brand owners cannot apply directly for BIS Certification. They must ensure their manufacturers (Indian or Foreign) hold valid BIS licenses before importing or selling products in India.
Note: BIS Certification is strictly for manufacturers only — not for traders or distributors.
